Italian researcher preparing for an expedition on a drifting iceberg

Alex Bellini

Italian researcher Alex Bellini is preparing to make an unusual expedition. Its purpose is to spend a year inside a spherical capsule on top of an iceberg drifting off the coast of Greenland until it completely melts.

In this way, he intends to once again draw attention to the consequences of global warming, which will inevitably lead to melting of Arctic glaciers and an increase in the level of the world’s oceans.

Alex Bellini is 36 years old, and he understands well what kind of challenges await him. To do this, he will need excellent physical and mental health. Experience he does not hold. In its active run with a conductor to a distance of 22.5 thousand kilometers and a trip on a rowing boat across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans with a total length of 34 thousand kilometers.

Capsule A. Bellini

The capsule, which will be a house for Alex Bellini for a whole year, will be installed on special rollers, which will enable it to turn around depending on the circumstances. The traveler does not exclude the extreme situation – the tip of the iceberg, when the capsule is in ice water.

In this case, sensors are installed in the capsule, which will have to fix oscillations inside the ice floe, and it will be able to adjust its fastenings. The life of the capsule will be provided by a wind generator, solar panels and Wi-Fi. Now Alex Bellini is looking for sponsors of this project called Adrift, which he hopes to start in November 2016.
